Also: ID all armor drops for the price increase. For non-white armor drops, run to the Rune Trader and pricecheck the runes and insignia. Salvage them off (using Expert or Superior Salvage kit, the normal salvage will only yield the materials) if their buy price is over 150-250 (that'll give you sell price higher than item price). You have 50% chance to destroy the item that way, so salvage the runes/insignia in order from most to least expensive.

For perfect weapon mods (e.g. +30 health, 20% enchant duration, etc), pricecheck on Guru or with your guild/alliance mates. You will have to sell these to other players, so it may not be worth your time.

For a new player this advice means squat.

If I understand correctly, you are changing your secondary class and buy/capture many skills to get them for your heroes. I assume you mean the heroes you get in the Nightfall and EOTN campaign.
This is quite expensive, since at the start you have a lot to unlock.

There are more ways to cheaply get skills for heroes.

- in the Nightfall and EOTN campaign, there are several hero skill trainers. These give you skills for hero skill points instead gold. Hero skill points are earned by playing through Nightfall and EOTN and earning higher title ranks with the sunspear, lightbringer and all of the EOTN title tracks. The first few title ranks are pretty easy to get - just by playing through the game.

- You can unlock skills for Balthazar faction points at the Priest of Balthazar. The priest is present in all of the PvP outposts and your guild hall, if you bought him. You get Balthazar faction by participating in PvP matches. Or you can farm it in the Zaishen Elite outpost. This is a tutorial for PvP players but can be (ab)used to farm Balthazar faction. You can farm up to 6000 every 24 hours. It is done by 4 players, usually one or two ranger trappers and the rest elementalist "finishers" - ask around in the outpost how the people do it. It's very easy once you get the point. You get one ordinary skill for 1000 Balthazar faction or one elite for 3000 Balthazar faction.
You have many free character slots - create a PvP character dedicated for this.

- If you play through the first half of the Prophecies campaign, there are many quests available that give you skills as reward instead of money. Play these quests. You should do this with a native Prophecies character, since there are much more quests available in the Ascalon area.

In my opinion, you started with the wrong campaign. Factions is not the best for starters. You should have started with either Nightfall (because of the heroes) or with Prophecies (no heroes but lower learning curve).

Awesome advice all over in this thread.

I stopped salvaging iron because i had so much, i didnt realize people buy it ;x

I'll have to start doing that again

eDIT: Didn't see page 2 ;p

I actually started playing back when the game first came out, then returned for factions, quit, and returned again for nightfall, then quit again. I have a characters with completed campaigns now, except factions.. I got bored my first time since I was doing it solo before heroes.

We all went over on our new factions characters and unlocked some of the starter heroes (dunkoro, talkora, koss, Olias) which are making factions almost too easy.

I didn't realize you could switch secondary at will before, so im unlocking everything for my main assassin too.. just to have all the options.

I'll try farming some pvp stuff for a while, but im already late for work so i can do a more thought out response when i get home!

Only higher lvl req white items r worth identifying for a higher merch price.
For lower lvl req whites the few xtra gold after id'ing negates the id cost.

Is there a central location/campaign where most people buy & sell ? I have not seen much activity in the way of a player market in the places I have been so far.

I would say Kamadan.

Kamadan is the top buy/sell place, followed by Lion's Arch, and to a lesser extent The Temple of Balthazar and Kaineng Center.

D'you know, he's pretty much right.

In the 5 years plus that this forum has been in existance, "how to make money?" threads have outnumbered threads on any other topic.

Sadly, it has got to the stage where these threads tend to be locked out of hand - and that can be very disheartening to a new user whose first thread on Guru gets locked.

What we need (in my ever-so-humble opinion) is one, small stickied guide, containing all the great tips contained within this thread - ID'ing whites, not buying unneccessary armor - all that sorta stuff. Nothing in-depth, we don't need builds or farms - just basic financial strategy.

If we do go this route, "money" threads will still be locked on sight, but with a link to the new sticky.

Sadly the guides tend to get outdated really fast it seems ;p

This thread has helped a ton. Even older guild wars players are learning stuff ( id whites!?)

Just tips like this are really nice, and a place to directly ask questions for up to date answers.

Go for it. These tips always come up every now and again but for some reason I can never find the threads that have them. If you/the community put a thread together I can link it in the General Campfire Guidelines as well.
